Jewish symbolism in art
"Without the Zohar, I could not have remained a Jew", said Hasidic Rabbi Pinhas of Koretz (1728-90). The Book of Radiance, or Zohar, appeared mysteriously in Spain in the 13th century. Since then it has become the dominant book of Jewish mysticism. Itself haunted by the interplay of light and darkness, the book has been a force of both illumination and shadow in Jewish history. Matthew Gindin will lead us in an exploration of the world and legacy of this fascinating book, whose text is featured in the paintings of Alina Smolyansky and Judith Joseph (on display in the gallery until May 16.
