BASICS OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY FOR SENIORS – ONLINE COURSE

This course was developed specifically as one of the pre-requisites for Activity Coordinators who wish to facilitate safe physical activity programs in Assisted Living facilities, Residential Care facilities and Adult Day Centres. It is not intended for those who wish to register with British Columbia Recreation and Parks Association fitness instructor training program.

In order to become a BCRPA Registered instructor you need this knowledge AND pass the BCRPA Exam. However this is also a worthwhile course for those who wish to understand fitness principles and get more out of their own work outs.

WEIGHT TRAINING COURSE

This BCRPA approved course is based on the NFLA guidelines for weight training instructors and can be done as a combination of interactive and online learning.

Course includes:
* Practical education hours in the weightroom
* Preparation for BCRPA instructor competency evaluation

Course Content:
* Overview of the weight training industry
* Exercise ideas for program design planning
* Review of anatomy and physiology; health screening and fitness testing
* Communication skills practice
* Application of scientific training principles; nutrition, supplements,
* Professional ethics and career direction.

About the Instructor: Melanie Galloway is a BCRPA Personal Trainer and Trainer of Fitness Leaders. Her course is based on the best, currently available scientific research in Fitness and many years of experience. Melanie is also the recipient of the 2011 BCRPA Educator of the Year.

OLDER ADULT COURSE (formerly Third Age)

(Ages: 18+)

BCRPA-approved Older Adult Specialty Module Course for Fitness Leaders

This course is an overview of aging and physical activity for individuals who want to expand their fitness knowledge of working with the older adult. BCRPA Approved Credits: 16

Pre-requisite: Anyone may take this course for interest. For BCRPA recognition as an Older Adult Instructor, registration in a BCRPA module (Group Fitness/Weight Training/Aquafit/Yogafit/Pilates Fitness) is a pre-requisite. There is also an exam and ICE for BCRPA instructors.

Course includes:
* Course reading materials
* Involvement in a seniors’ fitness class (during course)
* Interactive learning
* Practical exercises and activities to enhance and stimulate learning
* Preparation for the new BCRPA exam and ICE

Course covers:
* Overview of Aging and Physical Activity
* Psychological, Sociological and Physiological Aspects of Physical Activity in Older Adults
* Screening, Assessment and Goal Setting
* Program Design and Management for Older Adults With Stable Medical Conditions

About the Instructor: Melanie Galloway is a BCRPA Personal Trainer and Trainer of Fitness Leaders and recipient of the 2011 BCRPA Educator of the Year. Her course is based on the best, currently available scientific research dealing with the older adult. She was a member of the National committee to review the NFLA Older Adult Performance Standards in 2014.
