OLDER ADULT COURSE (formerly Third Age)
This course is an overview of aging and physical activity for individuals who want to expand their fitness knowledge of working with the older adult. BCRPA Approved Credits: 16
Pre-requisite: Anyone may take this course for interest. For BCRPA recognition as an Older Adult Instructor, registration in a BCRPA module (Group Fitness/Weight Training/Aquafit/Yogafit/Pilates Fitness) is a pre-requisite. There is also an exam and ICE for BCRPA instructors.
Course includes:
* Course reading materials
* Involvement in a seniors’ fitness class (during course)
* Interactive learning
* Practical exercises and activities to enhance and stimulate learning
* Preparation for the new BCRPA exam and ICE

* Overview of Aging and Physical Activity
* Psychological, Sociological and Physiological Aspects of Physical Activity in Older Adults
* Screening, Assessment and Goal Setting
* Program Design and Management for Older Adults With Stable Medical Conditions
* Teaching and Leadership Skills
* Communication and Marketing Guidelines
* Client Safety and First Aid
* Ethics and Professional Conduct
About the Instructor: Melanie Galloway is a BCRPA Personal Trainer and Trainer of Fitness Leaders and recipient of the 2011 BCRPA Educator of the Year. Her course is based on the best, currently available scientific research dealing with the older adult. She was a member of the National committee to review the NFLA Older Adult Performance Standards in 2014.
