COVID-19 Updates from Executive Director and Board

Dear JCC members, participants and community,

As a community, we have faced an unprecedented set of circumstances recently. Since making the difficult decision to close our doors last week, our JCC team has committed wholly and uncompromisingly to protecting public health, and to deploying resources to support our community in creative and dynamic ways at this challenging time. Your support for us, for one another, and for our community as a whole has been nothing short of awe-inspiring. We are deeply grateful to you for allowing us the time we required to assess this rapidly changing situation, to communicate accurately and clearly, and to build a strong foundation for continued service.

Initially, we communicated that the JCC would be closed until March 30, however, it has become clear that the JCC will remain closed until the public health authorities say we are able to re-open.

While our doors are temporarily shut we continue to provide a place for our community to connect. Our staff is bringing you quality virtual programming at our newly launched website onlyattheJ.com. We encourage you to participate and connect with us and each other.

We hope you are all keeping  well.  We wanted to update you on new developments and good news.

While our building is closed, our staff are working hard, and have created a VIRTUAL JBringing the Community to Your Living Room. 

This is our temporary new reality. And we are all in this together!

Visit us, talk to us, take a fitness class, find family activities, or just bring some happy time to your day. All from your home.

We will be adding new content daily. Visit often and share…

A reminder from Vancouver Coastal Health for COVID 19 prevention: wash your hands, cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, practice social distancing, and stay home when you’re sick.

Dear JCC members, participants and community,

The JCC will be temporarily closed starting tonight March 16 at 6:00 pm until March 30.  
We will assess the situation on a daily basis.

  • There have not been any confirmed cases of COVID-19 at the JCC.
  • This is a precautionary measure in line with the actions by the City of Vancouver
  • Daycare, Pre-School, Spring Break Camp and Club J will be closed following pickup today.
  • We will continue to communicate with you as the situation develops.

Over the last couple of weeks, we have been communicating with you about our ongoing work to keep the JCC members and our community healthy in the face of the novel coronavirus. We are grateful to all of you for your cooperation, and we are proud of our staff’s stepped-up cleaning, disinfection and awareness efforts. As far as we know, no individuals at the  JCC have tested positive for COVID-19.

Today, the Provincial Government announced new restrictions banning most gatherings. In deciding to close, the JCC is doing our part to reduce the rate of transmission. We encourage all of you—particularly those considered vulnerable—to take appropriate precautions to keep yourself healthy. This is the first time in the history of the JCC that we had to close our doors. It was a very difficult but necessary decision. And even though we are physically closed – we will continue to bring you creative ways to connect, to exercise your bodies, minds and souls. This continues to be our mission.

In the coming days, we will be sending information on how to keep connected, distance learning, exercise broadcasts and other valuable resources.We will also be checking in with isolated people in our community.

Rest assured that we will be doing everything possible to reopen quickly, from deep cleaning to staff training and, of course, staying in touch with our public health authorities. In the meantime, many of our staff will be impacted. You already know the extraordinary dedication of the teachers, trainers, and countless others who are the lifeblood of this place. Ensuring continuity to make it possible for them to return in place the moment our doors reopen is our highest priority.

At this time, we will not be able to issue refunds for March membership or tuition. Please know that we are grateful for your investment in the JCC and do not take it for granted. We will continue to communicate with you in the coming days as we determine our next steps. We appreciate your patience during this unprecedented situation and your understanding that we are working as fast as we can to plan for this new reality and to prioritize health and safety.

Dear JCC Friends and Families,

With growing concerns around COVID-19 (Coronavirus), I wanted to provide you with an update on our response to date and our commitment to you moving forward. The health, safety and well-being of our members, staff and guests is the JCC’s top priority. We are continuing to follow the lead of public health authorities on a daily basis at this important time. We are committed to providing a safe environment at the JCC.
In an effort to keep you safe and well informed, we wanted to share this link to the Vancouver Coastal Health website that contains current information about COVID-19.

We have taken the following measures in order to ensure everyone’s health and safety:

  • We continuously review our daily cleaning and sanitation protocols for all program and common areas, and are modifying and enhancing procedures where necessary and appropriate.
  • We have added additional hand sanitizer dispensers throughout our facilities.
  • We have posted proper hand washing and sanitizing information in all washrooms and on video screens.
  • We have increased the frequency of our disinfectant cleaning of frequently touched surfaces such as door knobs, handrails, counters and door handles.
  • We have asked any staff who are feeling sick to err on the side of caution and stay home.

There are a few steps that we would like to ask you, our valued members and participants, to take to aid us in our efforts to promote and maintain a healthy environment here at the JCC:

  • Returning from outside Canada: The province announced that “anyone who travels outside of Canada will be asked to stay away from work or school for 14 days upon their return and monitor for symptoms and avoid contact with others.” During the 14 day period, please refrain from coming to the JCC.
  • Please refrain from using the JCC if you are not feeling well. As well, please don’t send your children to the JCC if they are not feeling well.
  • Please use sani wipes/or our disinfectant to wipe off the gym equipment in the fitness centre and studios.
  • Please wash your hands frequently with soap and warm water.
  • Please cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing and properly dispose of tissues.

It is important to note that the risk of contracting COVID-19 remains low. Here’s what Vancouver Coastal Health says: “The risk of novel coronavirus transmission continues to remain low for residents of British Columbia.”

Nevertheless, we remain in communication with local health authorities as we continue to monitor the situation.
