Aaron Grossman’s story
JCC Bagel Club Catering is making a difference by transforming the lives of individuals facing barriers to traditional employment; barriers such as mental illness and other disabilities. Aaron Grossman’s story is an example of the direct impact that Bagel Club Catering has on our participants lives.
"Work helps balance my life and create positive experiences," says Bagel Club Catering’s, Aaron Grossman. Aaron has been training and working with JCC’s Bagel Club Catering Social Enterprise for over two years. Aaron says it helps him manage his disability through a lot of positive energy!
Bagel Club Catering is a Social Enterprise run by the Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver. It provides on the job training and meaningful employment for individuals living with mental illness and the disabilities in the Greater Vancouver area. For many of the 30 participants, this is the first work experience, and it lays the foundation for more success. That’s exactly what’s happened with Aaron. Through his hard work and individualized training he received from the program, he now has a part-time job at a local restaurant. This is the long term goal of Bagel Club Catering, to give individuals the skills they need, to ensure success outside of this Social Enterprise.
Aaron states the key to his success is that Bagel Club Catering staff understand his way of thinking and provide him with the tools for success in the work place, and he is looking forward to the future.
The Social Enterprise has grown greatly in the past year. And having a certified Red Seal Chef on board led to an increase in orders, expertise and high level training.
JCC Bagel Club Catering Social Enterprise has joined six-time Olympian Clara Hughes to raise money and awareness for mental health. Like Clara, Bagel Club Catering has been working hard to end the stigma surrounding mental health by creating awareness and providing the needed support to ensure success.
