An Underwater Play by Kendra Fanconi, Directed by Kim Collier
Produced & created by Electric Company & The Only Animal in partnership with
the Norman Rothstein Theatre & The Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver
“The One that Got Away will certainly leave you damp around the eyes.
But before you cry, this life-affirming folktale will make you laugh out loud
and reel you right into its shimmering oasis of theatrical delights.”
****—Alexandra Gill, The Globe and Mail
The One that Got Away, an underwater theatrical sensation which was originally produced as part of the 2002 Chutzpah! Festival, The Lisa Nemetz International Showcase of Jewish Performing Arts, is back! The play, written by Kendra Fanconi and created with Electric Company Theatre, received four 2002 Jessie Richardson Awards, including outstanding production. Performances take place May 28–31 and June 2, (all shows at 9:30 pm), at the Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver Swimming Pool.
Performed in the pool, The One that Got Away is the story of a girl with a fish where her heart should be. Her grandfather, a cantankerous old man, steals her heart when he dies. Drawing her into his watery purgatory, they travel back in time through a flood of emotion, to the town that drowned, and finally to discover a love as strong as death. With surreal underwater choreography, floating set pieces, live music and a shark-like chorus of the grandfather’s ex-wives The One That Got Away is a play rich in physical and visual imagery that explores the healing power of a story well told.
The One that Got Away stars actors Ryan Beil, Courtenay Dobbie, Kendra Fanconi, Nicola Lipman, Eric Rhys Miller, Richard Newman, Tracy Power and Kerry Sandomirsky. Directed by Electric Company co-Artistic Director Kim Collier, the production’s design team includes Yvan Morissette, set; Itai Erdal, lighting; Kirsten McGhie and Marina Szijarto, costumes; and Marianne Otterstrom, props. Musical Direction is by Wendy B. Stuart, with sound design and music by Bessie Wapp.
Following the run at Vancouver’s JCCGV Pool, the production will travel to Ottawa for the Magnetic North Theatre Festival, where it will be produced at the Soloway Jewish Community Centre pool, June 9–14, 2007. Audiences at both venues are advised to wear comfortable, light clothing and shoes, and to leave large bags and packages at home.
