Biblical Hebrew

First Year - Level 1 - 30 sessions, 75 hours  (will be offered again this Fall) 

Second Year - Level 2 - 20 sessions, 50 hours    

This is the forth offering of the unique course ‘Introduction to Biblical Hebrew the Practical Way’ at the JCC. This year only Level 1 is offered.   

People who already read Hebrew well (but not necessarily with understanding) will learn in Level 1 how to detect prefixes and suffixes and make sense of them. They will start to find their way in the complex verb system: the first verb stem, qal, the various root groups, and the most frequently occurring verb forms – prefix and suffix forms.  

If they wish to continue to the second year and take Level 2, they will be introduced to the remaining verb forms, participle, infinitives and imperative as well as learn about the other verb stems. 

The course requires dedicating a few hours work at home to be able to absorb and practice the material imparted. Vocabulary and grammar are demonstrated through short and later longer Biblical passages thus facilitating independent reading in the actual text.   

Rahel Halabe, MEd. will be teaching from her text HINNEH which is on its way to being published as a textbook.  The program is rigorous and practical, serious but not too academic. She has also taught it successfully at the Vancouver School of Theology and at UBC.
