9th Annual Young Authors' Tea

SUNDAY, Nov. 21
1:00 pm
With Guest Children’s Author ANNE-MARIE Baila ASNER
Calling all shaina punims, shluff kops and klutzs! Anne-Marie Baila Asner, author of Shmutzy Girl presents 'Playtime with Yiddishisms'. Treat yourself and your little ones to a bissle Yiddish. Through drawing, skits and a guessing game, your mamellas (girls) and tattellas (boys) will be forever endeared to the joy of shmutz, noshing and going shluffy and they'll learn just enough Yiddish to make bubbe and zaide kvell (proud.) The only kvetching you'll hear will be from your kids if you don't bring them to this multigenerational gathering for young authors.
ANNE-MARIE BAILA ASNER was born in Toronto, raised in San Diego and she presently resides in Los Angeles, California. Ms. Asner's children's books, Shmutzy Girl and Noshy Boy, published in 2004 by Matzah Ball Books are delightfully colourful and humorous. She has written for the Jewish Observer, the Jewish Family Life teen website MzVibe.com and the Anti-Defamation League. Her work has also been featured on JewishAustralia.com. Ms. Asner holds a Master's Degree in Psychology from Brandeis University, where she taught Sunday school through the Brandeis Jewish Education Program. She is one of five grandchildren to her Yiddish-speaking bubbe.
Friends and family of the young authors are encouraged to attend. The reading and tea are open to the general public.
Young authors gather for coaching at 1 pm sharp.
Audience members are welcome to watch the coaching session, pick up their pre-ordered Young Authors' Tea books or browse in the book festival bookstore.
The structured presentation will begin at 1:30 pm.

Admission is free. Everyone is welcome.
The Young Authors' Tea is supported by Judi and Len Libin and the Peretz Centre for Secular Jewish Culture.
Location: Wosk Auditorium

Submission Information
This year participants, grades 2 to 5, are asked to write a poem or a real or imagined story about a character inspired by one or more of a list of the top ten Yiddish, Hebrew and/or Sephardic word(s): shvitzy (sweaty), kvetch (complainer), shluffy (sleepy), klutzy (clumsy), shaina punim (cutie), nudnik (pest), chapachula or schlumpy (sloppy), motek or hamudi (sweetie), magniv (cool), madlik (someone who lights up the room) or chnun (nerd). Have fun with it!
All submissions will be printed and all the students who attend the Tea will be coached on how to present their writing out loud. There will be a draw for door prizes and if necessary, for the names of those young authors who will read aloud. Only those who arrive on time and sign in will be eligible for the draw.
The 9th Annual Young Authors Tea book, published with the support of Judi and Len Libin, should be ordered prior to the Tea as only limited numbers will be available for sale at the Tea. If your child has not brought a form home from school, ask for entry and order forms from JCC reception. Deadline for submissions and advanced book orders is Monday, Nov. 8 2004 at 5 pm.
